How to kick start your capsule wardrobe

This weeks blog post is here to help you figure out how to put together a capsule wardrobe full of clothing items and accessories which will be classic year after year as well as fit around an everchanging lifestyle and your own personality.

Firstly, what is a capsule wardrobe? If you have read the other posts, you may have seen this term crop up several times. You may even have an idea of what one is which is great, you are ready to move to the next stage.

For those of you unaccustomed with the term ‘capsule wardrobe’ it simply means to edit your own wardrobe down to pieces which suit your lifestyle and personality. It is best to consider how each piece transitions into different seasons and occasions, can it be layered? Are the chosen pieces timeless? Does it fit well? Does it represent who YOU are?

Do not let the idea seem daunting, start with small steps, and focus on the little changes which will add up to really make a difference. Start with the Marie Kondo method (as seen on Netflix) of bringing every item of clothing, accessory, and footwear together. This will allow you to see how much you own, as well as be able to go through everything to figure out what you really want to keep, or as Marie would say, ‘what sparks joy for you?’ Be considerate about each item you decide to keep or throw away. How does the piece fit on you? How does the piece fit into your lifestyle? Does it represent your personality? How often do you wear it?

Once you have broken down the fundamentals of your wardrobe, it is time to bring it together again. Consider the staple pieces which pair well with everything else in your wardrobe; these can transition into different seasons, and are practical. Such staple items can include:

· T-shirt

· Shirt

· turtleneck

· Blazer

· Slip dress

· A-line skirt (or similar)

· Maxi skirt

· Mid wash denim jeans

· Smart trousers

· Paper bag shorts (or similar)

These items are the start for ideas. The list can be adapted for the individual’s needs, you are the one that knows your body the best and will know what suits you most. The list can also change depending or your environment, work, and social life. A note should also be made that you should not throw out your entire wardrobe just to meet these needs – you will find yourself really missing that favourite t-shirt with the ‘Just peachy’ slogan.

Make sure to select items in neutral tones to make sure they can easily be mixed and matched. Black-white-grey, or white-tan-brown are classic colour tones that never become boring. Colour can also be a good way to inject personality, use a bold colour in a slogan or print on a select number of t-shirts or other pieces to show off who you are. This can also be done through a boldly coloured belt, jewellery, handbag, or outerwear. Personally, I feel confident when I wear an outfit which is simple, the trousers and t-shirt is black, paired with my red felt letterbox coat. Remember to choose accessories either simple, coloured, or printed which resembles you and not the current trends.

Remember this process is a journey you will forever take forward; you will find yourself always considering the choices made for your wardrobe as well as other areas of your life. This process will make you think more considerately about clothing purchases as you will want each item you bring in to reflect everything you have just put together in your current wardrobe.
